Aerial images show community threatened by floods next to 'at risk' dam in Ribeirão Preto
A community in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, faces imminent flooding risks due to its proximity to an inadequate flood control system.
Recent aerial images from EPTV reveal that residents of the 'Vida Nova' community in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, are at risk of flooding due to their location adjacent to the Santa Tereza Dam. This area, home to 170 families, is situated mere meters away from a flood mitigation system that has been operating at its limits during recent heavy rains, causing the water levels of the Ribeirão Preto creek to rise dangerously close to their houses.
Local community leader, Fernanda Aparecida, expressed the inhabitants' distress, noting, 'They have nowhere to go; they can't leave and look for another place, so they remain in this risk area.' The residents' concerns are compounded by the dam's questionable integrity, with fears that it could fail, especially considering the regular flooding that has plagued the Avenida Adelmo Perdizza area due to the dam's inadequate performance.
As these images underscore the grave situation, they also highlight the urgent need for intervention and support for these vulnerable families. With the threat of flooding increasing during rainy periods, local authorities may need to reevaluate the flood control systems and provide assistance to ensure the safety of the community members who currently feel trapped in their precarious living conditions.
