Aerial images show Peruíbe underwater; nearly 500 displaced

Aerial footage reveals significant flooding in Peruíbe, Brazil, prompting the mayor to declare a state of emergency as nearly 500 residents are displaced due to heavy rainfall.

Aerial images captured by a drone on Friday, September 27, show the coastal city of Peruíbe, located in São Paulo, submerged in water following intense rainfall that affected the Baixada Santista region. Almost 500 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as the local government declared a state of emergency. After experiencing a brief reprieve from the rain, the area was hit once again on Wednesday, September 25, with rainfall intensifying the following day, resulting in significant water accumulation in various parts of the city.

The rainfall over the past 24 hours reached between 44 mm and 78 mm in different areas of Peruíbe, leading to elevated water levels and flooding. The local government has issued alerts due to the ongoing weather conditions and the failure of water to drain from the flooded areas, despite the rain subsiding at the time the drone footage was taken. The situation remains critical as city officials assess the damage and coordinate emergency response efforts to assist displaced residents and address the immediate needs caused by the flooding.

The footage, recorded by Abner Reis, a cinematographic reporter for TV Tribuna, a Globo affiliate, captures the extent of the flooding and serves as a visual document of the disaster's impact on the community. As Peruíbe grapples with the effects of severe weather, the situation reflects broader climate challenges faced by Brazil's coastal regions, which may increasingly experience extreme weather conditions, necessitating improved disaster preparedness and response strategies from local authorities.
