Justice decrees arrest and seizure of students suspected of torturing freshmen at Etec with pliers, belts, and pipes

A court in Iguape, São Paulo, has ordered the arrest of one 18-year-old and the apprehension of two minors for allegedly torturing freshmen at a technical school.

In Iguape, São Paulo, a court has mandated the arrest of 18-year-old Kaue Vinicius Souza and the seizure of two minors aged 15 and 16, who are suspected of involvement in the torture of freshmen at the Escola Técnica Estadual (Etec). The incidents, which took place in a dormitory on the coast of São Paulo, have been registered with the Civil Police as bodily injury and physical violence. Following the charges, the suspects were indicted but later released, while the local Child Protection Council has also been involved in the case.

The Centro Paula Souza (CPS), which oversees the technical school, has expressed its strong opposition to any form of violence and is monitoring the situation closely. The educational institution has stated that the accused students have been removed from in-person classes amid the ongoing investigation. This case has brought attention to the disturbing practices sometimes involved in initiation rituals, particularly during the beginning of the school year, as reported by family members of the victims.

According to the families, the abuse took place during a so-called 'hazing oath' traditionally imposed on freshmen by senior students at the start of the academic year in February. Victims were reportedly instructed not to report the assaults, some of which were recorded. This raise serious concerns about student welfare and the measures that schools and authorities are taking to address such violent traditions within academic settings.
