On Emakeelepäev (Mother Language Day), a significant reading event takes place in Kadriorg, Tallinn, marking its fifth occurrence. The event commences at sunrise at 6:41 AM with President Alar Karis leading the opening reading. Throughout the day, the public is invited to gather at the presidential palace to enjoy readings carried out by around 70 participants, showcasing a variety of Estonian texts until sunset at 6:21 PM.
Each participating reader selects texts that resonate personally with them, with readings lasting approximately 10 minutes each. The selections range from poetry and literature to translated works and newspaper articles, highlighting the diversity and richness of the Estonian language. Notable individuals joining President Karis include various cultural figures, indicating the event's significance not just in promoting language but also in fostering community engagement through literature.
