Chika Oshiro becomes the first female player to qualify for an official shogi match after performing exceptionally at the Asahi Amateur Shogi Championship, securing two wins and a place in the top eight.
On the first day of the 48th Asahi Amateur Shogi Championship held in Minato, Tokyo, Chika Oshiro, a 23-year-old player, made history by becoming the first woman to register two wins in the tournament's history. Her performance allowed her to enter the top eight, thereby earning her the opportunity to participate in the professional-amateur match at the 20th Asahi Cup Shogi Open. This moment is particularly significant as it marks the first time a female amateur will take part in an official shogi competition.
Chika, who previously competed two years ago and faced an early exit, expressed her astonishment and joy at securing two victories this time around, emphasizing that her initial goal was simply to win one match. Her approach, focused on careful consideration during critical moments, proved to be a successful strategy that contributed to her remarkable results at this tournament.
Originating from Hamamatsu City, Chika has gained recognition for her achievements in shogi, including consecutive victories in the Women's Student Shogi Championship in 2022 and 2023. She noted that her recent training with stronger players has enhanced her skills, providing her with a supportive environment. Looking towards the Asahi Cup, Chika hopes to deliver strong performances in her matches, aiming for an effective and meaningful participation in the competition.
