Shogi Wars Semifinals: 20-Year-Old Megahi Wins and Heads to the Asahi Amateur National Tournament
A 20-year-old named Megahi Hiroki won the Shogi Wars qualifiers, securing a spot in the upcoming Asahi Amateur National Tournament.
On the 13th, just one day before the 48th Asahi Amateur Shogi Championship, the semi-finals and finals of the Shogi Wars qualifiers took place in Tokyo, attracting around 1,900 participants. Among these, Megahi Hiroki, a 20-year-old second-year student at Ritsumeikan University residing in Kyoto, emerged as the champion. This tournament, operated by HEROZ, allows the winner of the qualifiers to compete in the national tournament, a format that has been in place since last year's event. The qualifiers featured a fast-paced format known as '3-kire,' where each player has only three minutes to make all their moves. This created intense moments where a single mistake could significantly alter the game's outcome, leading to thrilling gameplay from beginning to end. After successfully navigating through initial qualifying rounds in January and February, Megahi and three other finalists competed in a high-stakes showdown that demonstrated both skill and strategy, as well as the unique excitement of the Shogi Wars. Following his victory, Megahi expressed his surprise at reaching this level of competition, considering the robust talent pool at the qualifiers. He conveyed that he thrives under pressure and drew energy from the attention, embracing the challenge and enjoying the exhilarating atmosphere of the matches. His journey through the tournament exemplifies his dedication and passion for shogi, setting the stage for his upcoming participation in the national championship.
