Hitachi and GE Vernova Consider Introducing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Southeast Asia

Hitachi is exploring the introduction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Southeast Asia in collaboration with GE Vernova.

On the 14th, Hitachi announced that it is considering the introduction of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Southeast Asia in partnership with GE Vernova, a leading U.S. heavy electric equipment manufacturer. The two companies signed a memorandum in Tokyo to explore opportunities for SMR deployment in the region, indicating plans to strengthen supply chains and collaborate with Japanese suppliers. Hitachi is involved in the production of essential equipment such as control rods for the reactors.

The partnership is also noteworthy as both companies are developing SMRs through a joint venture, with Hitachi having secured the first construction approval for SMRs in North America and Western Europe in Ontario, Canada, expected to be completed by 2030. SMRs are smaller in output compared to traditional nuclear power plants, which potentially reduces both costs and construction time, thereby attracting interest from various regions.

The push for SMR implementation reflects the rising electricity demand, partially driven by the expanding use of artificial intelligence. The exploration of this technology by Hitachi and GE Vernova demonstrates a significant step towards enhancing energy solutions in Southeast Asia, aligning with global trends in energy innovation and sustainability efforts.
