Police investigates whether speech therapist arrested in DF abused five other children with autism
The police are investigating whether a speech therapist, arrested for sexually abusing a 4-year-old autistic child, has abused five other autistic children.
Authorities in the Federal District of Brazil are currently investigating allegations of sexual abuse involving Thiago Oliveira Lima, a 37-year-old speech therapist who was arrested for the alleged abuse of a 4-year-old autistic child. Following his arrest, five additional families came forward, revealing that their children, aged between 2 and 8 and also on the autism spectrum, exhibited behavioral changes after sessions with Lima. These new claims prompted the police to initiate further inquiries into each case separately.
The police investigation is being led by delegate Elisabeth Frade, who has stated that each case will be treated uniquely due to the varying communication abilities of the children involved. Some of the children are non-verbal, which could complicate the process of gathering testimonies, whereas others may be capable of articulating their experiences. The police are prioritizing a thorough examination of each claim to uncover the potential extent of Lima's actions against these vulnerable children.
As the investigation unfolds, community concern is likely to grow regarding the protection of children with disabilities and the measures in place to prevent such abuses in specialized clinical settings. The response from law enforcement and child protection services will be scrutinized as families seek justice for their children and an assurance that similar incidents do not occur again in the future.
