Civil Police investigates psychologist suspected of child abuse against autistic child
The Civil Police in Araçatuba, Brazil, is investigating a psychologist suspected of abusing a five-year-old autistic child during a therapy session.
The Civil Police in Araçatuba, São Paulo, is currently investigating a psychologist who has been accused of sexually abusing a five-year-old boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The alleged incident took place around a month ago during a therapy session at a private clinic that is contracted with the local government. The mother of the child reported the case after her son disclosed an inappropriate encounter involving kisses during a session.
As part of the investigation, authorities executed search and seizure warrants at both the psychologist's clinic and his home. Items confiscated include a mobile phone, a laptop, and a list of children who are treated by the psychologist at his clinic, which is noted for its connection with the municipality. The police officer in charge, Igor Figueiredo, shared that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts to ascertain more details regarding the possible misconduct.
Although the psychologist has not been arrested, the investigation underscores significant concerns regarding the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly children with disabilities. The scrutiny around this case is likely to amplify discussions on the oversight of mental health professionals, especially those working with minors, and the measures in place to ensure children's safety in therapeutic environments.
