OAB-SP intends to meet with presidents of superior courts to discuss judicial reform
The São Paulo section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-SP) plans a meeting with the presidents of the superior courts on April 6 to discuss judicial reform amid a crisis in the Brazilian judiciary.
Amid a crisis faced by the Brazilian judiciary, the São Paulo branch of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-SP) is organizing a meeting on April 6 with the presidents of the superior courts. A major focus of the meeting will be the proposed reform of the justice system, including the establishment of a code of conduct for judges. Key participants will include OAB-SP president Leonardo Sica and a commission formed to address these issues, featuring former presidents of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Ellen Gracie and Cezar Peluso.
The need for such a meeting has been underscored by recent data from a Datafolha survey indicating a significant decline in public trust towards the STF. The survey revealed that 43% of Brazilians do not trust the Supreme Court, marking the highest rate of distrust recorded since 2012. This declining trust is crucial as it poses challenges to the legitimacy of the judiciary and raises questions about the need for reforms within the system to restore public confidence.
In January, the OAB-SP submitted a proposal for a code of conduct for STF ministers to the court's president, Edson Fachin. Following the April meeting, the commission is expected to present a legislative proposal to the Supreme Court and the National Congress by June, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and ethical standards within Brazil's top judicial institutions.
