Telia knows who is behind the data breach

Telia Norway has identified a criminal actor responsible for leaking stolen data, which could pose national security risks.

Telia Norway has confirmed that they are aware of the entity behind the recent data breach, which led to sensitive information being leaked on the dark web. Information chief Daniel Barhom revealed that while they recognize this is a criminal actor, they are withholding detailed information about the identity or motivations of those responsible. This breach has prompted Telia to allocate significant resources toward addressing, investigating, and mitigating the damage caused by the incident.

Security expert Christer Berg Johannessen highlighted that analysis of the leaked material reveals serious implications for national security. He noted that knowledge of physical line placements could facilitate targeted sabotage or eavesdropping on data traffic, which raises concerns for entities involved in national security, such as the Armed Forces and police. This breach not only affects company customers but poses a broader risk to societal infrastructures.

The data breach occurred at the end of November 2025, and investigations have shown that around 900 current and former customers had their social security numbers exposed. Additionally, nearly half a million private customers who have TV or broadband services with Telia are affected. This incident underscores the growing threats posed by cybercrime, particularly in relation to sensitive governmental and private data, necessitating enhanced cybersecurity measures across the industry.
