Nkom announces supervision of Telia after extensive data breach
Norway’s Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom) has initiated oversight of Telia following a serious data breach affecting numerous customers, including Bergen municipality.
The Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet (Nkom) in Norway has announced it will oversee Telia following a significant data breach that has impacted a large number of customers, notably including those from Bergen municipality. According to a press release, the data breach is considered severe by Nkom, and they are set to investigate the situation more thoroughly. Sander Norrøne Ask, the section chief for supervision and emergency preparedness at Nkom, stated that large quantities of data have been extracted, including sensitive communication data from Telia's customers.
In light of the breach, Nkom aims to determine the circumstances of the incident and assess whether Telia has upheld the necessary security requirements. The oversight will also involve coordination with the Datatilsynet (Data Protection Authority) given that the incident may also involve violations of privacy rights. This reflects a growing concern over data security and the protection of personal information in the digital age, as data breaches can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and organizations alike.
The public impact of this breach is significant as it was revealed that the personal information, including names and phone numbers, of approximately 2,000 to 2,500 employees and politicians from Bergen municipality has been stolen and published on the dark web. This breach not only challenges Telia's reputation but also raises questions about the security measures in place to protect customer data and the implications of such leaks on the trust between service providers and their clients.
