Ministry of Cities Award distributes R$ 7.5 million to peripheries
The Ministry of Cities in Brazil is awarding R$ 7.5 million to grassroots initiatives from urban communities and favelas across the country.
On March 21, representatives from 350 favelas and urban communities will gather in São Paulo to receive awards from the Ministry of Cities, which is distributing R$ 7.5 million to popular initiatives. The Periferia Viva 2025 award, established by the National Secretariat of Peripheries, will recognize 58 projects from the Southeast, 54 from the Northeast, 21 from the North, 10 from the South, and 7 from the Central-West, with an additional R$ 750,000 allocated for 30 technical advisory projects.
The event will be held at Casa de Portugal in São Paulo, where the Secretary of Peripheries at the ministry, Guilherme Simões, expressed that this initiative reaffirms the government's commitment to recognize and empower those who are actively transforming the country from the peripheries. This award emphasizes the importance of collective construction in community efforts, showcasing the vital role that grassroots movements play in Brazil's socio-economic landscape.
Since its inception in 2023, the award has recognized approximately 400 initiatives, distributing a total of R$ 19 million in financial incentives. This year's theme, 'Periferia Viva é Construção Coletiva,' highlights the collaborative nature of these projects and the ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions and opportunities within Brazil's marginalized communities. As such, the Periferia Viva award not only serves to provide financial support but also to foster a sense of community and solidarity among the participants.
