Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas conducts first organ donation of 2026 in Santarém
The Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas in Santarém performed its first organ donation of 2026, successfully harvesting two kidneys and two corneas.
On January 10, 2026, the Regional Hospital of Baixo Amazonas Dr. Waldemar Penna (HRBA) in Santarém, Brazil, conducted its first organ harvesting operation of the year, collecting two kidneys and two corneas from a 21-year-old man diagnosed with brain death. This operation marks a significant milestone for the hospital, which has been a reference point for organ donation services since it was accredited by the Ministry of Health in 2012. The family's decision to authorize the donation highlights the ongoing need for organ donation and the critical nature of such procedures in saving lives.
The young donor was from Alenquer, also in the western Pará region. Following the family's consent, the medical team at HRBA promptly carried out the organ retrieval and sent the harvested organs to the State Transplant Center of Pará (CET-PA), which manages the allocation of organs to waiting patients. This successful donation is part of broader efforts to improve organ donation rates in Brazil and respond to the high demand for transplantable organs, especially for patients on therapies like hemodialysis.
Alberto Mariano Gusmão Tolentino, the chief of the General Surgery team and the clinical vice-director of the hospital, emphasized the vital role these donations play in the lives of individuals requiring transplants. The emotional and transformative impact of organ donation can provide hope to many patients who depend on such critical medical interventions. The HRBA's achievements in this area reinforce the importance of awareness and discussion surrounding organ donation in Brazil, ultimately encouraging more families to consider the gift of life through organ donation, which remains a pressing need in the health care sector.
