Students at Pedroso School protest on Avenida João Paulo II in Belém over endless construction and mosquito infestation
Students from Pedroso School in Belém protested due to ongoing construction and health risks from a mosquito infestation in their temporary school building.
On Friday morning, students from the Pedroso State School in Belém held a protest on Avenida João Paulo II, raising concerns over the poor conditions of a neighboring building while their original school undergoes prolonged renovations. The school has been operating in temporary facilities, which have been deemed inadequate and unsafe for the students. Reports from locals and students highlighted alarming levels of mosquito infestations, specifically the Aedes aegypti, which poses serious health risks for those studying there.
The protest drew attention to these pressing health concerns, as the presence of vectors capable of transmitting diseases such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya threatens not only the students' well-being but also that of the surrounding community. The police were present to oversee the protest, ensuring that it remained peaceful and that traffic disruptions were minimized. However, the rally was interrupted by heavy rainfall in the early afternoon, which led to students dispersing prematurely.
In response to the protest, the State Department of Education (Seduc) issued a statement acknowledging the ongoing construction work at the school, indicating that it is nearing completion. Nevertheless, the incident highlights not only the immediate health risks faced by the students due to the conditions in their temporary school but also raises broader concerns about school infrastructure and the timely execution of educational facility renovations in Brazil.
