Several observation stations surpassed the heat record of March 7
On March 7, 2023, three observation stations in Latvia recorded new maximum temperatures, surpassing previous records for that date.
On March 7, 2023, data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) showed that three observation stations broke the maximum temperature record for the date. In Madona, temperatures reached +9.9 degrees Celsius, while in Priekuļi the thermometers hit +9.1 degrees, and Zosēni recorded +8.4 degrees. These dramatic rises in temperature are notable as they highlight a trend of rising temperatures in the region.
By three o'clock in the afternoon on that day, temperatures across the LVĢMC observation network ranged from +1.8 degrees in Daugavgrīva and Zvejniekciems to +10.0 degrees in Pāvilosta, showcasing significant regional variations. Last year on the same day, Dobele recorded a mark of +14.1 degrees, which serves as the national record for March 7. This year’s hike in temperatures not only highlights unusual warm weather but also raises concerns about the changing climate patterns affecting Latvia.
The previous months saw a stark contrast, with a total of 19 cold records broken in Latvia during February, while the end of the month and the beginning of March saw 17 heat records being set. Overall, throughout the previous year, Latvia observed the breaking of nine cold and a striking 396 heat records. This ongoing trend raises critical questions about climate change's impact in the region and its implications for future weather patterns and environmental conditions.
