Riga Transport Plans to Acquire 120 Buses in the Coming Year

Riga's public transport company plans to purchase 120 new buses, consisting of 60 electric and 60 diesel buses, to replace its aging fleet.

Riga's public transportation company, 'Rīgas satiksme,' has announced plans to acquire a total of 120 new buses over the next year. This fleet will include 60 electric buses alongside another 60 diesel buses, all intended to replace the aging vehicles that have been in service for over 20 years. The new buses will maintain the same 18-meter length as the current models, ensuring consistency in the fleet's operational capability. The company has already attracted interest from ten bus manufacturers, eager to provide these vehicles.

The competition for supplying these new buses appears robust, especially in the electric bus segment, where most contenders are European manufacturers. This reflects a growing market share for electric buses within the EU, as the industry shifts towards sustainability and lower emissions. In contrast, the diesel bus segment sees less competition, primarily featuring EU manufacturers that comply with stringent emission regulations, especially with upcoming stricter standards set to take effect in 2029.

Andris Lubāns, a member of the board at 'Rīgas satiksme,' emphasized the company's commitment to enhance public transport services while adhering to environmental targets. This initiative not only aims to modernize the fleet but also to contribute to the city's overall sustainability goals and improve the quality of public transport for its users. As such, this acquisition is a significant step in Riga's journey towards a greener public transportation system.
