Major Flood in the Kaunas Region: Homes Submerged, Urgent Press Conference Called

A sudden flood in the Kaunas region has submerged homes, prompting local officials to hold an urgent press conference to address the situation.

A severe flood in the Kaunas region of Lithuania has resulted in homes being submerged as water levels rose dramatically overnight. At 2 AM, the water level reached approximately 4 meters before receding to 1.45 meters by 7:30 AM. Local authorities, including Ramūnas Kemzūra from the Kaunas District Public Order Division, reported that a temporary embankment made of 200 tons of sandbags might have slowed the movement of ice towards residential areas, which can exacerbate flooding risks.

In addition to the Kaunas region, nearby areas in the Jonava district are also experiencing rising water levels, posing a significant threat to villages such as Salupiai and Šešuva and local gardening associations. As the situation developed, local emergency services announced a press conference scheduled for 11:30 AM in Radikiai to discuss the changes in water levels and the measures being taken to protect residents.

The fast-rising water levels have forced some residents to evacuate their homes in preparation for potential inundation. Many have heeded safety recommendations and left before the full extent of the flooding became apparent. The situation remains critical as local authorities continue to monitor the conditions and provide updates to the public regarding safety measures and any necessary evacuations.
