‘Pioneer of Korean Contemporary Music’ Composer Baek Byeong-dong Passes Away at Age 90

Baek Byeong-dong, a pioneering figure in Korean contemporary music and former professor at Seoul National University, has passed away at the age of 90.

Baek Byeong-dong, a prominent composer recognized as a pioneer of Korean contemporary music, died at the age of 90 on December 12. Born in 1936 in Manchuria, he completed his studies in composition at Seoul National University before refining his skills under the mentorship of composer Yun Isang at Hanover University in Germany. After returning to Korea in 1971, Baek held a position at Ewha Womans University and later at Seoul National University, where he nurtured a new generation of contemporary music composers while continuing his own composing career.

Throughout his lifetime, Baek created over 100 works spanning various genres, including songs, orchestral pieces, chamber music, operas, cantatas, dance music, and traditional Korean music. His notable compositions include songs like 'Blue Gravestones', 'Funeral Song', and orchestral works such as 'Jinyeo', 'Byeon-yong', 'Yeoulmok', and 'Jinhon'. Baek's music has been acclaimed for blending Western contemporary music techniques with Korean emotional elements, showcasing his innovation and deep cultural roots in his compositions. His collaborations also included working with poet Shin Dong-yeob on the operetta 'Seokgatap', which reflects his enduring impact on the arts.

Baek received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the New Artist Award in 1961, the Korean Composer Award, and the Seoul City Culture Award, among others. He served as a professor and an honorary professor at Seoul National University and was a chair professor at Cheonan University. Baek mentored many contemporary music composers such as Lee Jong-gu, Jin Kyuyoung, Baek Young-eun, and Jeon Sang-jik. His authored works, including 'Harmonic Theory', have become essential reading for music majors in Korea, solidifying his legacy. He is survived by his wife, Woo Hwa-ja, with funeral services being held at Seoul's St. Mary's Hospital, set to continue with the burial on the morning of the 15th.
