The Seimas agenda no longer includes an initiative to restrict Russian and Belarusian citizens' ability to purchase real estate in Lithuania
The Lithuanian Seimas has removed from its agenda a proposed initiative that would limit real estate purchases by Russian and Belarusian citizens, following a request from the Social Democrats.
The Lithuanian Parliament, known as the Seimas, has decided to remove a proposal aimed at restricting the ability of Russian and Belarusian citizens to purchase real estate in Lithuania from its agenda. This decision came at the request of the Social Democrats, highlighting ongoing tensions within the Seimas regarding foreign property ownership. Julius Sabatauskas, the Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs and Law Enforcement, emphasized that only the Government has the authority to submit such a bill under the existing International Sanctions Act. This restriction underscores the legal boundaries that the Seimas must operate within, as noted in the discussions surrounding the initiative.
During the Seimas session, Sabatauskas pointed out that while 15 members had signed the proposal, equating to a symbolic figure matching the number of Government members, it did not represent a formal bill endorsed by the current administration. The push to take this initiative off the agenda received significant support, with 68 members voting in favor, while 27 opposed it and 10 members abstained. This illustrates a clear division in the Parliament regarding how to handle foreign investment and property ownership, particularly from nations that are currently regarded with suspicion due to geopolitical tensions.
Overall, the move reflects not only a procedural adherence to legal constraints but also a broader political context in Lithuania concerning its stance towards Russia and Belarus. As Lithuania continues to navigate its foreign policy and domestic legal framework, the implications of such proposals may surface in future legislative efforts, possibly reshaping the conditions under which foreign nationals can invest in Lithuanian real estate.
