President Yoon: 'Second transfer of public institutions will be concentrated; scattered firewood cannot be used'

President Yoon has emphasized the importance of concentrating the second transfer of public institutions in specific regions to promote balanced national development.

On the 13th, President Yoon Suk-yeol outlined his administration's plans for the second transfer of public institutions during a town hall meeting in Cheongju, stating that this initiative will be concentrated in specific regions as it is critical to the nation's survival. He argued that the focus should be on fostering regional growth by creating central hubs, rather than distributing resources haphazardly, which could weaken potential energy and growth in those areas.

Yoon criticized the previous administration's first transfer of public institutions, which involved moving 153 agencies to ten innovation cities across the country starting in 2005. While this initiative saw success in expanding population and infrastructure in these regions, it failed to sufficiently increase the local business ecosystem and attract private enterprises. Yoon noted that many public institutions ended up isolated and ineffective in stimulating local economies.

Continuing his remarks, President Yoon indicated that legislative support for this initiative would be prioritized in upcoming regional integration bills. He acknowledged the competitive nature of attracting public institutions, while highlighting a current legislative effort aimed at integrating the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions as a step towards better strategic planning in public institutional placement.
