After video of capuchin monkeys at the Ponte do Futuro construction site in Paraíba, MPF investigates environmental impacts

The Brazilian Federal Public Ministry has started an investigation into the potential environmental impacts of the Ponte do Futuro construction in Paraíba after a video showed capuchin monkeys in the area.

A recent video recorded capuchin monkeys crossing a construction site for the Ponte do Futuro, located between the towns of Lucena and Cabedelo in coastal Paraíba, prompting the Federal Public Ministry (MPF-PB) to initiate inquiries regarding the potential environmental impacts of the project on local wildlife. The investigation comes in response to public concern following the video's release, emphasizing the importance of wildlife protection in development projects.

The MPF has requested detailed information about the environmental impact assessments related to the construction from the State Department of Infrastructure and Water Resources (SEIRH) as well as the Department of Highways of Paraíba (DER-PB). These agencies are expected to provide insights into the measures being taken to mitigate any adverse effects on the fauna in the vicinity, as part of their legal obligations.

In communications with the news outlet g1, the DER-PB indicated that they would respond to the MPF within the legal timeframe. Meanwhile, the SEIRH stated that responsibility for this issue lies with the DER-PB. This situation highlights the intersection of infrastructure development and environmental conservation, illustrating the need for careful planning to protect local ecosystems while accommodating human development needs.
