Paraíba Public Ministry requests Justice to halt construction in a cliff area in João Pessoa
The Public Ministry of Paraíba has filed a civil lawsuit to stop construction on an environmentally sensitive cliff area in João Pessoa.
The Public Ministry of Paraíba (MPPB) has taken legal action against the João Pessoa city government to halt the Project Orla Sul, which involves the construction and maintenance of a roadway on a cliff between Praia do Sol and Barra de Gramame. The MPPB argues that the construction site is designated as an environmental preservation area, highlighting the need to protect the region from potential ecological damage.
In its legal proceedings, the MPPB specifically points out that the contentious area spans 520 meters along the Gramame cliff within a 100-meter radius from its edge, a zone that is already suffering from identified erosion processes. The agency's request aims to ensure that no further erosion is exacerbated by the ongoing construction activities. Furthermore, the MPPB has threatened with daily fines of R$ 10,000 to the municipality if the court's order to stop the work is not adhered to.
The situation has attracted media attention, with Rede Paraíba speaking to municipal attorney Bruno Nóbrega, who stated that the city has not yet been officially notified of the lawsuit. This legal development underscores the rising tensions between urban development initiatives and environmental conservation efforts in Brazil, particularly in regions like João Pessoa where natural landscapes are under threat from construction projects.
