Partnership guarantees R$ 10 million to expand the Food Acquisition Program in Piauí

The federal government of Brazil will invest approximately R$ 10 million to enhance the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) in Piauí, focusing on the purchase of food produced by family farms.

The Food Acquisition Program (PAA) in Piauí, Brazil, is set to receive a substantial investment of approximately R$ 10 million from the federal government. This financial support aims to expand the program's capacity to purchase food from local family farms, providing vital resources for the social assistance network within the state. The partnership for this investment was formalized during a meeting between key government officials, including Piauí's Secretary of Family Agriculture, Rejane Tavares, and Lilian Rahal, the Secretary of Food Security from the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Combatting Hunger (MDS).

The PAA in Piauí is implemented by the Secretariat of Family Agriculture (SAF) and is designed to not only purchase food from family farmers but also ensure that these products are donated to various entities within the social assistance network. This includes organizations such as Social Assistance Reference Centers (Cras), solidarity kitchens, and charitable institutions, which play a crucial role in addressing food insecurity and providing support to vulnerable populations in the region.

The allocation of R$ 10 million is expected to significantly bolster the local agricultural economy by increasing demand for family-farmed produce, while also enhancing food security for those in need. As the program expands, it will create opportunities for small-scale farmers, stimulate local markets, and promote sustainable agricultural practices, thereby fostering a more resilient community in Piauí.
