Fallen trees, landslides, and traffic accidents complicate mobility in Quito this Thursday March 12

Heavy rains in Quito have caused fallen trees, landslides, and several traffic accidents, hampering mobility in the city.

On Thursday, March 12, beginning at 6:07 AM, ECU 911 reported multiple emergencies across Quito due to heavy rainfall that intensified overnight. The wet road conditions combined with speeding led to traffic accidents on major routes, particularly on Simón Bolívar Avenue and Ruta Viva. In one incident, a bus collided with a motorcycle, resulting in one injury that was stabilized on site.

Shortly thereafter, at 7:05 AM, a multi-vehicle collision involving three cars occurred in the La Cerámica area, exacerbating traffic congestion on Ruta Viva as a significant line of vehicles formed, heading towards the Valle de Los Chillos. This accident left two individuals injured, who were then treated on-site and transported to medical facilities for a full evaluation.

As crews worked to clear the roads and investigate the incidents, some routes remained closed. The overall situation underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and quick response to weather-related emergencies in the city, highlighting the impact of severe weather conditions on urban infrastructure and public safety.
