Court upholds actual prison sentences for drug dealers from Visaginas

A court in Panevėžys has upheld prison sentences for individuals convicted of drug trafficking in Visaginas.

In a recent ruling by the Panevėžys District Court, the judges confirmed the prison sentences for two individuals involved in drug trafficking in Visaginas. The court found no legal grounds to reduce the sentences imposed by the first instance, which require the convicted persons to serve two years and one year and four months in prison, respectively. This decision highlights the court's commitment to enforcing stringent penalties for drug-related crimes despite appeals for lesser sentences.

The case centered around I. Zubkovas, who was convicted for selling cannabis multiple times in Summer 2024. During police raids at his residence, authorities discovered over 230 grams of cannabis and cannabis resin, alongside electronic scales and packaging materials, indicating a clear intent to distribute. Zubkovas attempted to argue that he had acquired the drugs for personal use and only sold them upon requests from friends. However, the court found this defense lacking in credibility given the amount of drugs and other evidence that pointed to trafficking activities.

This ruling further underscores the judiciary’s stance on drug offenses in Lithuania, particularly as the country strives to combat drug-related crimes effectively. The confirmation of substantial prison sentences reflects the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing drug abuse and trafficking issues, serving as a deterrent for others considering similar illegal activities. The emphasis on maintaining significant penalties may also indicate a broader societal effort to address drug-related issues within the community.
