UN reports that war in Iran has displaced 3 million people from their homes

The ongoing conflict in Iran has resulted in the displacement of approximately 3.2 million people, with ongoing military actions likely to exacerbate humanitarian needs.

According to preliminary estimates by Ayaki Ito, the head of the UNHCR emergency response team, between 600,000 and 1 million households in Iran have been temporarily displaced due to the ongoing conflict, affecting around 3.2 million individuals. This alarming situation highlights a significant increase in humanitarian needs as military actions continue, with projections indicating that the number of displaced persons is likely to rise further.

The conflict intensified with the recent wave of attacks initiated by the United States and Israel on February 28, contributing to the turmoil in the region. Many of those displaced have fled from Tehran and other major urban areas towards northern and rural parts of the country, seeking safety amidst the violence. This migration underscores the vulnerability of the Iranian population as they are forced to abandon their homes in search of security.

Moreover, refugee families already residing in Iran, predominantly consisting of Afghans, face additional challenges amid the crisis. Ito cautioned that these groups are particularly at risk due to their precarious circumstances and the increasing humanitarian crisis as the conflict persists, demanding urgent international attention and assistance.
