Iran has more than 3 million displaced people since the war began, says UN

The UN reports that nearly 3.2 million Iranians have been displaced within the country due to ongoing conflict, with many fleeing from major cities to rural areas.

Since the outbreak of conflict involving Israel and the United States on February 28, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that approximately 3.2 million individuals in Iran have been displaced internally. Among those affected, an estimated 600,000 to 1 million families find themselves temporarily uprooted from their homes, primarily escaping from Tehran and other large urban centers. These families are seeking refuge in northern regions of the country and in rural areas where they hope to find safety from the ongoing hostilities.

The displacement crisis highlights a dire humanitarian situation as the ongoing conflict continues to escalate. The UNHCR emphasizes that the number of displaced persons is expected to rise as hostilities persist. The report draws attention to the urgent humanitarian needs that are emerging as a result of this widespread displacement, complicating the situation further for both displaced individuals and those who have long been residing in previously stable regions.

Moreover, the conflict is also impacting refugee families who have sought asylum within Iran, particularly Afghan refugees, who find their precarious living conditions compounded due to the influx of new displaced persons. Limited support networks and resources make their situation increasingly challenging, drawing attention to the broader implications of the conflict not just for those directly affected in the war zones but also for vulnerable communities already coping with instability in the region.
