In Uttar Pradesh, the government is implementing a rapid installation of smart meters, which are largely in the prepaid format, necessitating users to recharge their meters before receiving electricity. As of now, over 7.7 million smart meters have been installed in Uttar Pradesh, significantly easing the monitoring and management of electricity consumption.

The prepaid meter system means that consumers must pay upfront for their electricity, similar to mobile phone recharge systems. This shift in billing practices aims to ensure timely payments from users and reduce the losses incurred by electricity suppliers due to unpaid bills. The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has announced that consumers who fail to pay their electricity bills will soon face disconnection, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward non-payment.
