The Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni inaugurated the fully renovated building of the State Conservatory in Thessaloniki after extensive conservation and restoration work.
Lina Mendoni, the Greek Minister of Culture, inaugurated the fully renovated State Conservatory building in Thessaloniki, which has undergone significant restoration and conservation work. The conservatory, located in the historic neighborhood of Fragkomahala in the city center, is an emblematic structure with roots dating back to the 19th century. Originally built in the 1840s as a residence, it has served various purposes over the decades, including as a branch of the Ottoman Bank starting in 1863.
The architectural style of the State Conservatory is eclectic, featuring neo-baroque, neoclassical, and French architectural elements. The building underwent a redesign in 1890 by engineers Baruch and Amar, showcasing the rich historical and cultural significance of the structure. Notably, the garden surrounding the conservatory is adorned with statues representing Economy and Banking Faith, reflecting its historical context.
During the inauguration, Mendoni highlighted the restoration's importance, emphasizing that it was a priority for the Ministry of Culture from the moment they took office in 2019. The renovation was funded by 5.5 million euros, showcasing the Greek government's commitment to preserving and enhancing the cultural heritage of Thessaloniki for its citizens and future generations.
