Genial/Quaest: Majority sees STF with too much power and considers voting for pro-impeachment candidates

A new survey reveals that a significant majority of Brazilians believe the Supreme Federal Court (STF) has too much power and indicates support for candidates advocating for the impeachment of its ministers.

A recent Genial/Quaest survey indicates that 72% of Brazilians perceive the Supreme Federal Court (STF) as being overly powerful. The poll results suggest a growing public concern about the judiciary's influence, particularly as 66% of respondents expressed interest in voting for Senate candidates who support the impeachment of STF ministers. The survey, conducted from September 6 to September 9, included responses from 2,004 individuals, with a margin of error of 2% and a confidence level of 95%.

Trust in the STF has significantly declined, with 49% of Brazilians stating they do not have confidence in the institution, compared to 43% who do. This marks a decrease from November 2022, when confidence was at 56%. Furthermore, 59% of respondents believe that the STF aligns with President Lula's government, a sentiment particularly echoed among supporters of former President Bolsonaro and right-leaning voters. Despite mixed perceptions, 51% of those surveyed considered the STF important for maintaining democracy in Brazil, while 38% disagreed.

Awareness of the STF's recent actions is relatively high, as around two-thirds of participants were informed about the imprisonment of a political figure. This indicates a growing engagement with political events and concerns surrounding judicial authority in the country, which could have significant implications for the upcoming elections and the overall trust in governmental institutions in Brazil.
