Launch of the ‘Easy Korean Language Usage’ Media Cooperation Group

A new media cooperation group has been established in South Korea to promote the use of easy and correct Korean language in the media.

On December 12, the National Language Culture Association, along with various media organizations in South Korea, held a launch ceremony for the ‘Easy Korean Language Usage’ media cooperation group at the Korea Press Center in Seoul. This initiative aims to address the current state of Korean language usage in newspapers and broadcasts, focusing on correcting the increasing prevalence of foreign words and improper expressions. The group plans to convene bi-monthly meetings to discuss methods for spreading a culture of using simpler Korean language and to recommend new terms that can be proposed by the National Institute of the Korean Language.

During the launch, the cooperative outlined their commitment to using accessible language, ensuring that communication with the public is clear and correct, and maintaining a quality standard in the use of language. The chairman of the National Language Culture Association, Kim Deok-ho, emphasized the importance of journalistic language being easy to understand and highlighted the responsibility of media organizations in expanding the use of public language. He reinforced that the goal is to foster a culture that encourages the use of Easy Korean language in media communications.

The initiative's implications suggest a growing awareness and responsiveness to linguistic challenges within the South Korean media landscape. By advocating for simpler language and proper usage, this cooperation group not only aims to enhance public understanding but also hopes to protect and promote the Korean language against the influences of foreign terminology. This may lead to more inclusive media practices and a stronger connection between the media and its audience, making information more accessible to the general public.
