New timeline for the bike path on the coastal front
The Attica Region has granted a new 145-day extension for the coastal bike path and pedestrian project in southern Athens, pushing its completion to July 10, 2026.
The Attica Region has announced a new extension of 145 days for the 'Athens Riviera – Urban Walk' project, which carries a budget of 16.8 million euros. This extension delays the completion of the coastal bike and pedestrian path to July 10, 2026, from the original deadline of February 15, 2026, due to several unforeseen factors. The bike path traverses several neighborhoods along the southern coast of Athens, including Kallithea, Palaio Faliro, Alimos, Elliniko, Glyfada, and Voula.
The delay has been attributed to the need for additional technical works that were not included in the original project plan, modifications to the route following requests from municipalities and businesses, impacts from ongoing developments in the Elliniko area, and pending permits from local authorities. The project is being carried out by Zetakat ATEVE, which has been cleared of blame for these delays according to the recent decision by the Attica Region.
The urban bike path project aims to enhance the coastal region's infrastructure, promoting better connectivity and encouraging cycling and walking in the area. These delays underline the challenges of urban development projects, particularly in response to changing local needs and regulatory environments. While the extension may frustrate local residents hoping for timely completion, it reflects the complexities involved in maintaining and upgrading public infrastructure.
