Mauritians Support Sexuality Education in School and Access to Contraceptives Regardless of Age

A significant majority of Mauritians support comprehensive sexuality education in schools and access to contraceptives for all sexually active individuals, regardless of age.

A recent study reveals that there is overwhelming support among Mauritians for comprehensive sexuality education in schools and access to contraceptives for anyone who is sexually active, regardless of their age or marital status. Key findings indicate that 68% of the population believe contraceptives should be available without restrictions, and 56% support access for individuals of any age. Additionally, the strong consensus on the necessity of such education is emphasized by the fact that over 90% of citizens advocate for schools to incorporate sexuality education into their curriculum, aiming to empower young people with the information needed to make informed choices about their sexual health.

Amid discussions on reproductive rights, the survey also found that a substantial majority of Mauritians consider abortion justifiable under certain circumstances, indicating a progressive stance on women's health issues. An impressive 91% of respondents believe that abortion should be permissible if the pregnancy poses a risk to a woman's health or life, while 82% consider it justifiable in cases of rape or incest. Furthermore, economic and personal circumstances also play a role, with 61% endorsing abortion if a woman cannot afford to care for a child, and 53% supporting the right to terminate a pregnancy for any reason. This reflects a growing recognition of the complexities surrounding women's reproductive choices in Mauritius.

Moreover, the survey highlights the critical topic of education for pregnant girls, with two-thirds of Mauritians supporting policies that allow these students to remain in school. This stance is coupled with a significant endorsement for women's autonomy over decisions related to marriage and childbearing, signifying a larger cultural shift towards endorsing women's rights in Mauritius. This growing support aligns with Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those aimed at promoting gender equality and empowering women and young girls in education and health matters.
