'3 daughters have been born, let my husband marry a second time,' woman commits suicide after being tortured

A 24-year-old woman in Maharashtra committed suicide after facing severe torture from her in-laws, who pressured her to allow her husband to marry again.

In a tragic incident from Mhalasapur village in Maharashtra's Beed district, a 24-year-old woman named Bhakti Amol Korde took her own life by consuming poison, following prolonged physical and mental abuse from her in-laws. The abuse stemmed from the fact that she had three daughters, which her in-laws used to justify their harassment. They reportedly coerced her into allowing her husband to take a second wife and subjected her to regular beatings and intimidation to sign a consent form.

The harassment escalated over the last two and a half years, leading to Bhakti's desperate decision on February 2, 2026. After ingesting poison, she was hospitalized initially at Beed district hospital and later moved to a private facility. However, due to her family's poor financial condition, she was transferred back to a government hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on March 6, 2026. This case has prompted a police investigation, with a formal complaint lodged against her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law at the Pimplner police station.

Bhakti's distressing story brings to light the severe societal pressures and violence that women often face in patriarchal structures, especially concerning family lineage and the preference for male heirs. The incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for societal change and the protection of women's rights, as well as the importance of addressing domestic violence more effectively in India.
