Woman Found Hanging Under Suspicious Circumstances After Torture for Dowry Demand of 2 Million

A 32-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after enduring dowry-related torture, with her family accusing her in-laws of murder.

In a tragic incident involving dowry harassment in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, India, a 32-year-old woman named Sonam Singh was found dead under suspicious circumstances. Her family has alleged that her in-laws murdered her due to their persistent demand for 2 million rupees in dowry, which was not met, and then attempted to disguise her death as a suicide by hanging her body. The complaint has been filed by her mother, Manju Devi, with the police stating that the case was registered at the Bariyawan police station.

Sonam Singh was married on December 11, 2023, to Markandey Singh from the nearby Sonbarsa village. Her family reported that shortly after the marriage, Markandey and his family began demanding an additional dowry and subjected Sonam to both physical and mental abuse when their demands were not fulfilled. The systematic torment she faced has raised serious concerns about the culture of dowry in India and its tragic consequences.

The police have taken action following the complaint and have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding Sonam's death. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence in Indian society, sparking public outrage and urging authorities to take stricter measures against such abuses, which continue to endanger the lives of many women.
