Scam of the false lawyer: woman loses over R$ 48,000 after falling for a scam in Garanhuns
A 38-year-old woman was defrauded out of more than R$ 48,000 in a 'false lawyer' scam in Garanhuns, Brazil, after being deceived by criminals posing as legal representatives.
In Garanhuns, a city located in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, a 38-year-old woman fell victim to a 'false lawyer' scam, losing over R$ 48,000. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 10, when the victim received a call from criminals claiming she had won a legal case against a health plan. They persuaded her that in order to receive her winnings, she needed to make immediate payments. With the deceitful firmness of the callers and believing she was communicating with a legitimate lawyer she had engaged in the past, the victim proceeded to transfer a total of R$ 48,589 via Pix, a digital payment system popular in Brazil.
According to the Civil Police's report, the scammers used a phone number linked to a WhatsApp account that displayed the photo of Arthur Cortez, a known lawyer who had previously represented the victim. This manipulation of identity played a crucial role in gaining the victim's trust, illustrating how scammers exploit personal connections and previous interactions. After realizing she had been scammed, the victim reported the incident to the police, which has since classified the case as fraud and launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators.
The rise of such fraudulent schemes raises alarm about the safety of digital transactions and highlights the need for public awareness regarding common scams. Authorities encourage individuals to verify identities and be cautious when prompted to make payments, especially from unsolicited communications. This incident reflects broader trends in cybercrime, particularly as criminals devise more sophisticated methods to deceive innocent individuals.
