Woman who sold goods valued at R$ 18,000 to pay for her husband's funeral expenses becomes a victim of a scam by a fake lawyer

A woman selling her nautical belongings to cover her late husband's funeral expenses was scammed by an individual posing as a lawyer.

In a troubling incident, a Brazilian woman found herself the victim of a scam after trying to sell nautical items valued at R$ 18,000 to finance her husband's funeral expenses. The suspect, who introduced himself as 'Dr. Victor Carelli', managed to trick her into believing that he was acting as an intermediary for a buyer, while he was simply orchestrating the fraudulent sale. Despite the woman’s desperate situation, she was misled into believing that the transaction would go smoothly without any direct communication with the actual buyer.

The scam was executed through a process of triangulation, where the fake lawyer convinced the victim to sell a seven-meter aluminum canoe, a Yamaha outboard motor, and a trailer at an unusually low price of R$ 9,500. He preyed on the woman's urgency to conclude the sale swiftly, which led her to comply with his instructions without confirming the legitimacy of the buyer. While the scam unfolded, the purported buyer sent money through electronic transfers, using the accounts provided by the con artist, which resulted in the woman relinquishing her belongings without receiving any payment.

Fortunately, the authorities were able to recover the stolen items shortly after the transaction took place. However, the suspect remains at large, evading law enforcement. This incident underscores the vulnerability of individuals in desperate financial situations and highlights the need for greater awareness about scams that exploit such predicaments.
