Elderly woman lost R$ 35 thousand after falling for scam by false court server in PI; criminal made video call

An elderly woman in Brazil lost R$ 35 thousand to a scammer posing as a court official who communicated with her via video call.

An elderly woman in Piauí, Brazil, was defrauded of R$ 35,000 by a scammer impersonating a court server. According to police reports, the scam began with a conversation over WhatsApp where the impersonator provided convincing details about an ongoing legal case the victim was involved in, suggesting she had won a court ruling. This deceptive communication was followed by a video call that further established the scammer's credibility, leading to the victim's monetary loss.

The crime is part of a larger investigation known as Operation False Lawyer, targeting a network of criminals operating across multiple Brazilian states, including Ceará, Pernambuco, Goiás, and Amazonas. Law enforcement officials, led by Delegate Humberto Mácola of the Cybercrime Repression Department, revealed that the gang was responsible for creating fake identities of lawyers and court officials to extort money from unsuspecting victims under the pretense of collecting nonexistent fees related to legal services. As of the latest updates, 14 individuals have been arrested, and authorities are searching for 30 more suspects involved in this operation.

This incident highlights the growing prevalence of cybercrime in Brazil, where criminals increasingly use sophisticated methods to manipulate victims. The elderly are often targeted because they may be less familiar with technology and more trusting of seemingly legitimate communications. The police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and to be cautious when sharing personal information, especially in online communications, as these scams continue to evolve and become more convincing.
