Clones of a centennial fig tree are planted in Campo Grande

Three new fig trees, cloned from historical specimens, have been planted in Campo Grande as part of an urban greening initiative.

Campo Grande has welcomed three new fig trees that were planted on Avenida Mato Grosso, which were cloned from the centennial fig trees located on Avenida Afonso Pena. These trees are regarded as significant historical, cultural, and landscape heritage for the capital city. The planting initiative was organized by the Municipal Secretary of Environment, Urban Management and Economic, Touristic, and Sustainable Development (Semades) to enhance urban greening efforts while preserving an important symbol of the city's legacy.

The new fig trees have been in cultivation for approximately seven years at the Municipal Nursery Flora do Cerrado, which focuses on producing plant species for urban planting and donations to local residents. The first of these cloned trees was planted in September last year, marking the beginning of this initiative, and the recent additions have now enriched the landscape of Avenida Mato Grosso.

According to Ademar Silva, the municipal secretary of Semades, this initiative aims to preserve the city’s historical context while also increasing green spaces. This effort not only beautifies the city but also helps in addressing environmental concerns related to urbanization, creating a healthier urban ecosystem through increased tree planting.
