Local Governments Increase Purchases of Electric Buses from China

Białystok signs a major contract to purchase 60 electric buses from Chinese manufacturer Yutong to enhance its eco-friendly public transport system.

The city of Białystok, Poland, is making significant strides towards sustainable transport by electrifying its fleet of public buses. On March 11, the city signed a large-scale contract to procure 60 electric buses from Yutong, a Chinese manufacturer, at a total value of 153.6 million PLN. The deal not only includes the buses but also encompasses 15 charging stations, with financing partly provided by EU funds. This investment underscores Białystok’s commitment to eco-friendly transport solutions as part of broader efforts to combat emissions and improve urban mobility.

The buses, specifically the Yutong U12 model, feature a low-floor design and are equipped with high-capacity batteries, allowing for nearly 500 kilometers of travel on a single charge. Each bus can accommodate at least 65 passengers, with 28 seated, and includes amenities such as automatic air conditioning and heating, energy recovery systems, and accessibility features for passengers with disabilities. These enhancements not only improve passenger comfort but also demonstrate the city’s focus on social responsibility in transit services.

Białystok’s decision to source these buses from China has raised questions regarding the reliance on imported vehicles. However, the city plans to receive the buses in two batches: the first 30 within a year and the remaining 30 within 18 months. This procurement marks a crucial step in modernizing Białystok's public transport while aligning with EU sustainability goals, presenting a balance between immediate needs for eco-friendly transport and the complexities of international procurement practices.
