The greatest damage to forests in Latvia last year was caused by pests

Last year in Latvia, pests caused the most extensive damage to forests, affecting 83% of the total damaged area according to the State Forest Service (VMD).

In Latvia, according to information from the State Forest Service (VMD), pests have been responsible for the largest damage to forests in terms of area, continuing a trend seen in previous years. In 2025, pests contributed to a total damaged area of 6,592 hectares, which accounts for 83% of all affected forest areas. The distribution of damage was notable across different regions, with Vidzeme experiencing 2,327 hectares of damage, followed by Central regions with 1,942 hectares, Southern regions with 1,906 hectares, Eastern with 1,234 hectares, and Kurzeme with 538 hectares.

The primary pest contributing to this extensive forest damage remains the eight-toothed bark beetle, responsible for 99% of all pest-related harm. Additionally, in 2025, windfall and storm damage played a role in affecting forest areas, with 892 hectares reported to be impacted, making up 11% of the total damage. This year, similar to previous years, the most commonly affected tree species were also the most widespread, with spruce forests being particularly hard hit with 7,023 hectares suffering damage.

The implications of such damage raise concerns about the sustainability of forest ecosystems in Latvia, affecting biodiversity and potentially leading to economic repercussions for industries reliant on timber. The importance of monitoring forest health and implementing effective pest management strategies will be crucial in mitigating these issues in the years ahead, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach among environmental authorities, forestry professionals, and local communities.
