Nekalab has opened its doors in Tampere's Nekala - over a hundred artists received long-awaited workspaces
Nekalab, a new multi-arts center in Tampere, Finland, has opened, providing long-awaited workspaces for over a hundred artists across various creative disciplines.
A former school building in Nekala, Tampere, has been revitalized into a creative hub known as Nekalab, which held its opening this week. This multi-arts center has attracted artists from various disciplines, including visual arts and music, who have long sought dedicated workspaces. CEO Annamaija Saarela from Live Laboratory Tampere Oy, the center's operator, emphasized the collaborative and inspiring environment that Nekalab fosters, with several artists sharing workspaces.
The need for such facilities in Tampere is urgent, as there has been a significant shortage of workspaces for professionals in the cultural sector. The application process for renting spaces was competitive, particularly from individuals in music and visual arts. The city's goal was to allocate these workspaces to artists at risk of losing their current studio spaces, ensuring continuous creative output and community contribution from these professionals.
Nekalab aims to offer not only the physical space necessary for artistic work but also an environment that encourages social interaction and collaborative projects among artists. By addressing the critical lack of studio spaces, Nekalab contributes to the vibrancy of the local art scene and supports the livelihoods of over a hundred artists who are now part of this creative community.
