From the Life of a Teacher / A Good Approach and a Good Question: Notes from the Cologne Clock Tower

A group of Slovak high school students engages in an Erasmus+ mobility program, exploring Cologne and experiencing the city's famous clock tower.

A group of thirty high school students from Slovakia, accompanied by their teachers, stands outside the renowned 4711 perfumery in Cologne as part of an Erasmus+ mobility program. The program includes a city tour, but inclement weather, with a chilly wind and light rain, adds to the day's challenges. The students eagerly await the performance of the clock tower's three carillons, which their guide—a local high school principal—suggests they should be able to recognize at least one of them.

As the students wait, with only nine minutes left until the performance, the principal distributes their semester report cards. The boys from the all-male school are visibly distracted as they open their folders, with sounds of laughter and teasing filling the air. This moment of anticipation is momentarily overshadowed when the first carillon begins its show, momentarily diverting their attention from their grades as soldiers reappear from the tower and a local pigeon unexpectedly takes center stage, much to the amusement of the spectators.

After the performance concludes, the students, who have been shivering in the cold, begin to make their way towards the Cologne Cathedral, reflecting on their experiences of direct cultural exchange and educational opportunities. The event not only showcases the significance of the Erasmus+ program but also highlights the valuable moments of camaraderie and learning that such excursions foster among the young participants.
