Suspect of strangling young woman should have been in closed prison regime, says MP-AP

The Amapá Public Prosecutor's Office questioned the justice system regarding a suspect in a murder case who was supposed to be serving a sentence but was instead listed as a fugitive.

The Amapá Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-AP) has formally requested explanations from the court regarding potential failures in Brazil's prison system. This call for clarification comes after it was revealed that the individual suspected of murdering Ana Paula Viana Rodrigues in Santana was actually a fugitive from the Amapá Penitentiary Administration Institute (Iapen). Prosecutor Fabiano da Silveira Castanho noted that the accused had been sentenced to 13 years and 6 months in prison for qualified homicide and still had over nine years remaining on his sentence. Despite this, records indicate he has been absent from a closed prison regime since October 2025, when he failed to return from an external work assignment.
