Flight chaos threatens again

German Lufthansa pilots are going on strike starting March 12, causing widespread disruption to air traffic, particularly from Germany.

Starting March 12, pilots at German airline Lufthansa will go on strike due to unsuccessful negotiations regarding retirement and working conditions, as reported by Reuters. This strike has been called by the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) after talks with the company's management broke down, highlighting ongoing labor tensions within the airline industry.

The strike is scheduled to commence as soon as the clock strikes midnight on March 12 and last until just before midnight on March 13. It is expected to severely disrupt air traffic, particularly affecting flights departing from Germany, which has raised concerns among passengers and airlines alike. Additionally, pilots from Lufthansa Cargo and regional subsidiary CityLine are expected to join the strike, further exacerbating the impact on logistics and passenger travels.

The previous strike held by Lufthansa's pilots and cabin crew in February resulted in the cancellation of over 800 flights, disrupting travel plans for around 100,000 passengers. With the upcoming 48-hour strike expected to result in even greater chaos, the union VC has taken steps to exempt certain routes from the strike due to geopolitical tensions and humanitarian reasons, indicating the complexity and seriousness of the ongoing labor disputes in the aviation sector.
