Aviation: Lufthansa Pilot Strike Begins

A two-day pilot strike at Lufthansa has commenced, with significant flight cancellations expected in Munich and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa is currently experiencing a two-day pilot strike that has resulted in expected flight cancellations mainly at its hubs in Munich and Frankfurt. The airline has committed to operating at least half of its scheduled flights on both strike days, with long-haul flights potentially seeing 60% of services still in operation. The impact of this strike follows a previous strike wave that was larger in scale and supports the union's bargaining strategy.

The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, which represents the striking pilots, has indicated that this strike is smaller in scope than the previous one, where around 800 flights were cancelled. Union leader Andreas Pinheiro anticipates about 300 flight cancellations per day during this strike, asserting that this level will still effectively leverage the union's demands. The striking pilots are seeking better working conditions and pay, a common issue within the airline industry.

In response to the strike, Lufthansa plans to utilize larger aircraft and employ services from non-struck airlines within its group to mitigate disruptions. Furthermore, the airline is encouraging voluntary measures among employees to assist in maintaining essential operations, demonstrating a proactive approach to managing the impact of industrial action while still prioritizing passenger travel during this period.
