Second-hand is still in – new store attracted hundreds of customers in Rovaniemi
The Finnish Red Cross opened a new Kontti thrift store in Rovaniemi, attracting a large crowd on its opening day.
The Finnish Red Cross recently launched a new Kontti thrift store in Rovaniemi, marking an expansion from their previous, much smaller location. This new store, situated in the former building of the Hovimäki store, signifies the growing popularity and success of second-hand shops in Finland. On the opening day, hundreds of eager customers lined up to explore the new offerings, demonstrating a significant trend toward sustainable shopping practices in the region.
The excitement surrounding the launch reflected the ongoing second-hand boom in Finland, with the store prepared for a large turnout by offering coffee and cake to the first thousand customers. However, due to the overwhelming response, the celebratory cake ran out before the afternoon, showcasing the strong community interest in supporting sustainable shopping options. One customer, Ulla Myllymäki, mentioned that her curiosity brought her to the store as she looked for any interesting finds.
Kontti stores sell donated goods to benefit charitable initiatives, and with 12 locations across the country along with an online store, the Finnish Red Cross is emphasizing the importance of recycling and community support. The new Rovaniemi location adds to this mission, conducting various outreach activities and encouraging people to donate items, further promoting the second-hand culture that is gaining traction in Finnish society.
