Two amateur football players died after crashing into a fallen tree on highway BR-010 in Governador Edison Lobão, Maranhão.

Two amateur football players, identified as José Paulo and Rogério, died in a tragic accident on the night of Tuesday, October 10, as they collided with a tree that had fallen on BR-010 in Maranhão. The incident occurred near kilometer 238, close to the Bananal community where the players lived. According to the Federal Highway Police, heavy rain and strong winds were the cause of the tree falling, obstructing both lanes of the road at the time the players were passing through.

The players were returning from participating in the Copa do Trabalhador, an amateur football tournament held at the Arena PKS in Imperatriz. Emergency services, including the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU), were promptly dispatched to the scene following the incident. Unfortunately, despite receiving immediate medical attention, both José Paulo and Rogério succumbed to their injuries shortly after the collision.

This tragic event highlights the dangers posed by adverse weather conditions and the importance of road safety, particularly when severe weather can lead to sudden hazards like fallen trees. The local community is likely to mourn the loss of these young athletes, who were active participants in their local sports scene, reminding everyone of the fragility of life in the face of unexpected events.
