Ice Hockey World Championships Coming to Finland – No Other Applicants

Finland and Latvia have submitted a joint bid to host the 2030 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships, with no other contenders competing for the event.

The process for bidding to host the 2030 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships is advancing, with Finland and Latvia having filed a joint application in January to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Currently, there are no other applicants vying for the opportunity to host the prestigious tournament, which is set to be officially awarded during the IIHF Congress in May. Heikki Hietanen, the president of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and a member of the IIHF board, emphasized this fact in the organization's press release.

Finland is slated to be the main host of the championships, with the initial round of matches and crucial playoff games such as the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals set to take place in the country. Latvia's capital, Riga, will also participate by hosting a secondary group stage and some quarterfinal matches. Two qualifying arenas that meet the tournament's requirements are located in Finland, one in Tampere and another in Helsinki. Hietanen expressed excitement about the prospect of bringing the championship games back to Helsinki.

The news has also been positively received by Helsinki's mayor, Daniel Sazonov, who shared Hietanen's enthusiasm, noting the excellent opportunity this represents for the city. With Finland's history and love for ice hockey, the event is anticipated to be a significant boost for local tourism and sports culture, highlighting the nation's commitment to hosting international sporting events successfully.
